Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Making Tax Digital is the biggest change to self assessment in years, and it is rolling out in stages based on your income.

From April 2026

Sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 need digital records and quarterly updates to HMRC.

From April 2027

The threshold drops to qualifying income over £30,000, bringing in many more self-employed people.

From April 2028

It drops again to over £20,000. Qualifying income is your combined turnover from self-employment and property, before expenses.

I check whether and when MTD applies to you, set you up in Xero with Apron for receipts, and send your quarterly updates and final declaration for you. You carry on working; I keep you compliant.

Sole trader questions

Do I need an accountant as a sole trader?

You don’t have to have one, but many sole traders find it saves time and tax. With Making Tax Digital adding quarterly updates, having someone keep on top of it for you takes a lot of pressure off.

Can you help if I’m not in Suffolk?

Yes. I’m based in Sudbury, but everything is digital, so I work with sole traders all over the UK.

I’m behind with my records. Is that a problem?

Not at all, and there’s no judgement. I’ll help you catch up and get everything tidy before your deadlines.

Do you work with tradespeople and farmers?

Yes, they are my specialisms. See my construction and CIS and agricultural bookkeeping pages.
